President Xi Jinping will pay state visits to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan f

rom June 12 to 16, a foreign ministry spokesperson announced Sunday.

From June 12 to 14, Xi will pay a state visit to Kyrgyzstan and attend th

e 19th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Or

ganization (SCO) to be held in the capital city of Bishkek, Spokesperson Lu Kang said in a statement.

From June 14 to 16, Xi will attend the fifth summit of the Conference

A total of 85,000 international students studied in postgraduate program

s in China in 2018, a year-on-year increase of 12.28 percent, the Ministry of Education said on June 3.

Among 492,200 international students studying in China in 2018, 52.44 percent were studying in

degree programs, up 6.86 percent from 2017, said a press release from the ministry.

The growth of international students in engineering, management, science and agricultural science all reached 20 perce

nt, indicating the increasing attraction of science programs in China, the statement said.

The international students in China came from 196 countries a

nd regions and 52.95 percent of them were from 64 countries along the Belt and Road.

About 63,000 of them were sponsored by Chinese government scholarships, the ministry said.

China’s civil servant law, newly revised in December 2018, took effect Saturday.

The revised law clarifies systems of civil servant promotion and asses

sment, and includes statutes to improve rewards and benefits such as pension schemes.

It also tightens supervision over civil servants, keeping its statutes in

line with the supervision law and disciplinary rules of the Communist Party of China.

The revised law bans civil servants from working as leaders of industry regulators or administrati

ve departments in charge of supervising businesses run by their spouses, children or in-laws.

The civil servant law first took effect in 2006.

All-women quartet gives Peking Opera a unique touch

For the first time in the history of Peking Opera, four women recently performed a

piece in the China National Peking Opera Company production, Stories of the Red Army.

The Peking Opera performance was one of the 51 productions showcased at the 12th China Art Festival in Shanghai.

Two performances took place at Shanghai’s Majestic Theater on May 27 and 28.

For the show, the CNPOC brought together three stories based on events during the Red Army’s epi

c Long March (1934-36), to create the modern Peking Opera, which premiered in Beijing on Aug 1, 2018.
